Overview
This is Newport in Pembrokeshire, distinct from Newport beside the Usk. Its Welsh name, Trefdraeth, means beach town. The River Nevern separates its two shores, the Parrog and Newport Sands, while rocky Carningli rises above the town.

Carningli’s landscape, archaeology and legends
Carningli’s open common land is grazed by sheep, cattle and ponies. Its Iron Age hillfort retains parts of its ramparts and hut circles, providing physical evidence of earlier occupation. Newport also has a Norman castle, adding another period to the town’s history. Carningli’s name means mountain of angels, and the hill has a traditional association with the sixth-century missionary Brynach. Stories of him speaking with angels belong to local legend. They offer a different kind of account from the surviving archaeological remains.
