Overview
Torfaen stretches along the Llwyd valley from the Newport edge towards Bannau Brycheiniog. Its historical and cultural places range from Blaenavon’s industrial landscape to decorated objects in Pontypool and contemporary art in Cwmbran. Llandegfedd Lake adds a different setting on the border with Monmouthshire.

Industrial heritage and decorated objects
Blaenavon’s industrial landscape is a World Heritage Site. In Pontypool, Torfaen Museum occupies a Georgian stable block and holds decorated Japanware made locally in the mid-eighteenth century. The Shell Grotto reflects another use of decorative materials. Commissioned by the ironmaster John Hanbury in the late eighteenth century, it has a sandstone exterior and interior decoration using shells and animal bones.
Art and the lakeside landscape
Cwmbran’s Llantarnam Grange shows contemporary art, adding a present-day cultural strand to the area’s museums and historical sites. On Torfaen’s eastern border with Monmouthshire, Llandegfedd Lake provides a contrasting setting for water birds. The lake, contemporary art and industrial heritage offer different starting points for exploring the council area.
