City walls and a printing town
Derry’s walls were built between 1613 and 1618 by the Irish Society as defences for settlers from England and Scotland. They form a walk around the inner city, where the early street plan survives. The original gates are Bishop’s Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate and Shipquay Gate. In Strabane, Gray’s Printing Press preserves presses and printing equipment behind an eighteenth-century shopfront on Main Street. It recalls the town’s history as a printing centre, providing a different industrial example alongside Derry’s fortifications.
