Centuries of civic life at Guildhall
Work on the present Guildhall began in 1411. The building survived the Great Fire and the Blitz, and continues to host civic functions and meetings of the Court of Common Council. Its role in City government reaches back to the Middle Ages. Roman amphitheatre remains were found beneath the Guildhall area. They provide evidence of an earlier use of this part of the city, alongside the later history of the civic building.
Post-war vision at the Barbican Estate
Construction of the Barbican Estate began in 1965 and lasted eleven years. Designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the complex includes homes, the Barbican Centre, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and a library. It was Grade II listed in 2001. The estate stands near the northern edge of Roman Londinium. Surviving wall fabric was reused and altered in later periods, adding another historical thread to this twentieth-century setting.
